Everio Video Hunters! Remote Recording of Birds using a Smartphone and the GZ-HM550 Bluetooth function! – Part 2

Setting up the camera on the Squirrel Path

There are many animals in Inokashira Park Zoo other than birds. Next, I went to see the "Squirrel Path"! The Japanese squirrels are free to roam about in the grass, and they run past at your feet at lightning speeds.

The squirrels were so cute, eating walnuts and playing with each other. I wondered if I could shoot them from a "squirrel’s perspective"… This is exactly the kind of situation in which the remote recording function of the GZ-HM550′s really excels.

So I set a really low mini tripod on one of the paths the squirrels use. The squirrels would never come by if I had been sitting down and controlling the camera there. I sat down a short distance away from the camera and waited as I monitored the camera from my Smartphone.

After about 5 minutes, several squirrels were gradually coming nearer the camera. You really get a sense of closeness when seeing things from a squirrel’s perspective!

Patience is key when recording birds and squirrels.
Although waiting to capture the best shot from a distance is tiring, animals are really great subjects for shoots. I made a new discovery with every shoot. The remote recording function could be useful on other occasions too, such as recording yourself or recording a meeting that is happening in another room (depending on the material of the walls).

Capturing recorded images on the Smartphone!

Using a Smartphone enables you not only to record remotely with the GZ-HM550, but also to capture recorded images as still photos on the Smartphone. As I wanted to let my daughter look at the squirrels that I shot today, I tried capturing photos of the squirrel into my Smartphone.

To do this, you select a shot from a video or still photo taken with the GZ-HM550 and capture it in the Smartphone. Once you have forwarded the image to your Smartphone, you can easily share it with friends. Furthermore, if you have a BIP/OPP-compatible (*1) device, you can transfer still photos from the GZ-HM550 to your phone without any other special software.
*1 To use this feature, the BIP or OPP-equipped phone must be able to receive still pictures.

Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve written about the GZ-HM550′s GPS recording, remote recording and still photo forwarding functions, but the GZ-HM550 and its Bluetooth technology allows for many more possibilities – such as a sound monitoring function that allows for users to record the voices of children playing from a wireless headset.
