Soccer Scenes Captured with Wide Angle, Zoom and Time-Lapse REC

Hello, this is Ayako. In the last two posts, Toshi showed us the soccer scenes he captured with the HD Memory Camera GC-PX10, but for this round, I would like to introduce some sports action taken with the Everio! I captured by hand with the GZ-HM860 and I used the Time-Lapse REC feature with the GZ-HM440 on a tripod.

Wide Angle Capture of Group League Sports with the GZ-HM860

The most appealing feature of the GZ-HM860 when capturing soccer scenes is its 29.5mm wide-angle lens!
Since you can get a wide capture of the athletes’ action from one of the corners of the field, you capture not only the movement surrounding the ball, but also the entire field. You can cover the entire game in the screen! On top of this, with no picture deterioration, the 15x Dynamic Zoom lets you zoom in beautifully on each athlete. With this, I can zoom in on exciting scenes of players facing off. Since these scenes were taken by hand, the Advanced Image Stabilizer really helped, reducing the camera shake in the video.

Now, while predicting the movement of the game, I was recording! I selected either the Intelligent AUTO, or “SPORTS” on manual as the shooting mode. Please take a look at the wide-angle scenes I shot using the GZ-HM860 with the 15x Dynamic Zoom.

Trying Out the ZOOM MIC!

The GZ-HM860 is equipped with a function called the ZOOM MIC.
This is a feature which syncs the microphone to the camera’s zoom in order to change its directivity. This means that as you zoom in on a subject, the microphone increases its directivity. At the same time, when you zoom out, the directivity decreases and a wider sound area is captured. Since I haven’t really used this function up until now, I didn’t really know when it would be best used, but when I turned it ON this time the effect was a perfect match for this shoot. Please try listening closely to the audio while watching this video!

With the wide shots, the audio has a spacious sound image, and when I zoom in on one of the players, you can really hear their individual voice come alive. As the video and audio gets closer and farther with the zoom, it feels very dynamic, as if you were right there. The ZOOM MIC function is very handy indeed. I would like to try out this function in other situations as well.

Soccer Scenes Captured with the GZ-HM440 Time-Lapse REC

Finally, I would like to show you the Time-Lapse REC video I shot with the GZ-HM440.
I set the interval at 1 sec or 5 sec. I tried from various angles, such as taking the camera off of the tripod and shooting from close to the field. Watching the players’ movements in Time-Lapse REC is very interesting.

Capturing sports scenes can be difficult with so much movement on the field! Even when you ready your camera for the next movement, the action might be different from what you expect. For this reason, this shoot was a bit challenging at times. Shooting exciting sports action makes the person with the camera feel as if they are participating in the game as well. This may be another reason why capturing sports scenes is so appealing.
